National Geographic’s Traveler magazine has named Pittsburgh among the 20 best trips to make in 2012.

The glossy publication revered by photographers included Pittsburgh among the monumental fjords of Iceland, the perfumed oasis of Oman, the biodiversity of Panama and sun-drenched beaches of Thailand as a location not to miss.

“Its mourning for its industrial past long concluded,” Traveler writes, “this western Pennsylvania city changed jobs and reclaimed its major assets: a natural setting that rivals Lisbon and San Francisco, a wealth of fine art and architecture, and a quirky sense of humor.”

It seems hardly a week goes by without Pittsburgh making another list of some kind. In the past year the region has been named among the most liveable; best for tech job growth; best for new college gradsmost affordable for home buyers; and most mustache-friendly.

Asked by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “Aren’t all these compliments getting old?” Craig Davis of VisitPittsburgh replied: “Are you kidding me? It never gets old.”
